Customs Specialist - Richmond Hill, ON
Our client is a globally recognized company renowned for its product quality and customer support.
This role within the Customs department acts to oversee the junior
customs associate’s work, reviewing samples to ensure correct HS classifications are being
applied, and that the broker is not overcharging on duties and taxes for imports, conducting
monthly reconciliations to ensure that the company’s exposure to risk is mitigated in the event
of a customs audit by the CBSA.
The Customs Specialist conducts ’smell-tests’, making sure that the customs broker cleared goods properly
and duty payments are inline with what they are expected to be for the month.
With the junior customs associate’s work, are we comfortable at how we are classifying
After seeing how the company clears products after 6 months or so, they will have that base
knowledge, and as new products come on board, there will be new classifications involved,
and they will be able to make the judgment calls on whether things are aligned with where
they should be or not, and to help the junior person.
They will take on special projects and needs such as our CETA refunds, robotics classifications
overtime once they acquire that base knowledge,
working with external tax consultants supporting
their European and US colleagues.
They need to have a sense of urgency and be proactive in responding to requests for
information. They need to be able to prioritize items for
follow up, so being well organized and conscientious is essential to build the trust
and rapport with internal colleagues.
They will receive strong support in the on boarding process to ensure that they have
the tools they need to succeed.
- CCS or CTCS designation, or working towards it with the CSCB
- 2 to 3 years general customs rating/clearing, HS Tariff classifications and coordination experience
- Ocean/Truck customs clearances; European and US inbound shipments
- Good knowledge of NAFTA Certificates, TIBs, Refunds
- Self-motivated, excellent communicator, able to juggle multiple priorities
- Strong time-management skills, proactive and possessing analytical and judgment skills
- Patient to progress internally to work towards a future management responsibility
- Adaptable, flexible and a good team player
